My family and I used to eat here every weekend when I was in middle school through high school, which was quite some time ago. I asked my mom why we stopped coming here for at least 10 years, especially since we were regulars for so long. Well, she said the food was just OK...And one afternoon we thought, hey, let's go back and get that sea bass with tofu and black bean sauce that we used to love back in the days. So we went a few weeks ago and were shocked that the worker still remembered us!!! Even after a 10 year "break" from going there, the owner remembered that my mom cannot drink tea so she automatically brought her a separate pot of plain hot water. The highlight at this place really is the sea bass with tofu and black bean sauce. It's just the perfect amount of sauce and fish and tofu and onions and peppers and deliciousness. We usually also order the oyster sauce chicken on cake noodle and a char siu rice plate to split. Even the char siu plate has changed, before their char siu was so dry but now they put gravy on top! It keeps the meat moist and is the perfect touch. And the best part is that the food is cheap and comes out fast. We even ordered take out (4 plates) and they said it would be ready in 10 min, during peak lunch hour.I would give 5 stars but have to dock one because sometimes the service can be lacking. I understand it gets busy during lunch with other diners or phone calls or people coming in to pick up their take out. But sometimes when we ask for a box it takes forever. Other than that I would say everything is excellent!

This is the best place in Kalihi--I live near Dole Intermediate--to get Chinese food. Tasty's Chop Suey isn't the same as when I was a kid. From Hong Nien I love their beef broccoli, roast duck, crispy gau gee, and cake noodles.

More like a 3.5, I came here with the bf and a little before 830 and there was only a family of 4 dining in and a couple other people coming in to pick up their take out orders. The place is a tad bit small but there is a lot of parking in a business building where you wouldnt think thered be a chinese restaurant. For dinner we got their shrimp fried rice which was just okay as I've had better. We got their roast duck which was delicious and moist and their mongolian beef which had good flavor, not enough spice for my taste and the beef was just a big chewy. Overall the ladies that helped us were really nice.

If you want a cheap meal for lunch or dinner this is the place. It's tasty and they give pretty generous portions. I come here once in a while when I have to pick up co-workers lunches. They have great lunch plates which include beef broccoli, char siu, gau gee, etc.The gau gee is homemade and crispy goodness. I really like the salt and pepper shrimp with it's hot peppers and tons of garlic. The place is kind of outdated but I've never sat down to eat here before.Take out is always quick. I once phoned in an order of 4 plates and it was ready to pick up in 15 minutes. Parking is ok if it's not peak hour. It's located in the Belt Collins Center next to the Jack in the Box on Umi St. so there is private stalls available.

Tried the sweet sour fish it is awesome. Had a hard time making conversation with the waitress but she was really nice. Oyster sauce cake noodles were delicious and only $5.50. Glad I tried this place. Will be back next week.

Ok guys no frills mom and pop cantonese chinese family still restaurant... prices are still reasonable and always coming out of the wok hot and fresh!! no panda express overcooked, gray, and warmer heated food. You're getting Hong Kong style cusine locally in Hawaii. Try their dinner for 4 special which includes their popular Salt and Pepper Kahuku Shrimp, Sweet Sour Fish, Half HK Crispy Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Spicy Szechuan Eggplant w/ chicken, Rainbow Corn Velvet Soup, and steamed rice with complimentary hot oolong tea. Worth the price!! If you buy it ala-carte separately you'd spend a bit more.We always buy this one then add our other faves.Enjoy!! Nice and cozy corner family restaurant.Casual dining. Not fancy. The manager and waitress is one and the same. :)Love it!!Reggie

"Chinese beef stew wun tun mein here is HANDS down the BEST I have tasted across the globe. If you like tendon and bean curd wrapping (hu jook (sp?)) then you will love this meal. I haven't tried anything else there but it did look good from afar on the other tables. ..."‎
